Question by : Should I give back something I took from someone’s trash?
My neighbor from accross the street put an old, plastic, heavy duty Fisher-Price toy box on the curb for collection. It was dirty and her kid had written all over it with permanent marker. I decided to grab it and see if I couldn’t clean it up and make some use out of it. The neighbor was outside when I took it. I pointed at it and she smiled and waved as I took it away. I managed to get all the marker and dirt off it and I was pretty pleased. It looks almost as good as new. My problem is that when my neighbor came over with her kid so they could play she saw the toy box in my living room. She said “Is that actually MY old toy box that I put on the curb?” I told her “Yes it is. Looks good doesn’t it?” And then she actually asked me if she could have it back! I told her I had already given it to my boy and it was filled up and I had spent a good 3 hours scrubbing it down. She said if I won’t give it back I should AT LEAST give her like $ 50 for it. I tried in the nicest way possible to tell her that I wasn’t giving it back and I wasn’t paying her for something that SHE THREW IN THE GARBAGE. She left in a huff and sent her husband over later to try to “talk some sense into me and explain to me how rude I am being”. I still refused. I think SHE is being rude. She is already telling people that I’m “cheap” and a “theif”. What do I do about this nonsense? Call me stubborn, but I don’t want to give in.  Read more...
